Ledger42 was assembled as a plain record of active websites, organised by subject so that visitors can locate relevant addresses without the noise of a general search result. The directory takes its name from the tradition of the ledger, a bound account of entries, each noted in order and preserved for reference.
The record presently holds 835 entries across 22 subject headings, from Solicitors & Legal Chambers and Physicians & Infirmaries to Grand Tour Operators & Guides and Sporting Houses & Wagers. Each heading constitutes a separate folio within the chronicle, and browsers may move between sections as one moves between chapters of a bound volume.
Entries are accepted through a simple submission form on the site. The domain submitted must resolve to a reachable address; once confirmed, the entry is filed under the appropriate heading and noted in the register. There is no charge for listing, and the editorial judgment applied is limited to verifying that the address is accessible and falls within one of the 22 subject areas.
Duplicate entries are prevented by a unique constraint on the domain field, so each address appears in the chronicle at most once. Operators who have previously submitted a site may check whether it appears by browsing the relevant section; if absent after several days, resubmission through the form is the recommended course.
The directory does not rank, rate, or editorially review the sites it records. Ledger42 is a neutral chronicle: it notes that a site exists, states the address, and files it under the appropriate heading. The assessment of quality and relevance is left entirely to the visitor consulting the register.
